The Carapace wears grown chitin, compressed by the Collective's bio-engineers until solid shot skips off it. Pax built his fighting around that fact. He sits, he lets the fire arrive like weather, and he launches bio-bombs from batteries in the hull.

The bombs are grown in cavities, the way fruit is grown, and he will not fire one that is not ripe. He says the unripe ones lack character. When a ripe one strikes, the payload strips plate. He has never lost the coating. His opponents are rarely that fortunate. Collective biologists treat the hull as a laboratory that has stayed in service a long time without a shed-and-regrow.
