Matron Zix

The Collective calls her Matron because she birthed her ship. That is not a metaphor. The Hivemother grew from a seed-shell in orbit over a gas giant, fed for eight years on biomass and solar wind until it was large enough to fight.

Zix's own pattern runs through every strand of the hull. Her nerves reach the fighter bays and the vats below. When the ship is hurt, she is hurt. When a drone dies, she feels it go. Her drones are extensions of her spine. Kill her and they keep attacking for minutes, on impulses that have not yet learned their mother is gone.

The seed-shell she was grown from was a million-year-old fragment, taken off a gas-giant moon. The Collective does not discuss where the seed came from. It does not need to. The fragment is why the Collective is the Collective. Zix will die in the hull before she lets it leave.
