Captain of Volunteers
A Bolukbashi leads the volunteers: crews who joined a war late, on a handshake instead of the articles, for a share instead of a wage. They are eager, badly equipped and impossible to predict. The Bolukbashi's whole job is pointing them at the enemy and getting out of the way. The Company keeps the arrangement informal, which suits everyone until the shares are counted.
