Reaver-Lord Cassis Oren

Cassis Oren was raised in the reaver-house of Oren-by-the-Black, which trains its people to take dead vessels whole to the Dominion's reclamation yards. The work is honorable inside the houses and disreputable outside them. He was taught to take pride in both. He apprenticed under his uncle Veris, who read a wreck the way a physician reads a body.

Veris died in a contested salvage, killed by a rival house over a dispute the Dominion declined to judge. The house appealed. The appeal was lost. Cassis honored the funeral, walked out of the gate, and has not returned. He still works wrecks. He no longer turns the proceeds over to the house. The Long Inheritance is named for the debt his uncle was owed and never paid. He will work for anyone who is not a reaver-house.
