Necromancer-Captain Halden Voss

Halden Voss is a necromancer by inheritance, not by ordination. His mother was a Dominion necromancer of standing. She did not take him as her apprentice. She sent him to a fleet academy, intending a different career. She was killed before he finished it. He went back to her chambers, opened the working-books, and started to read. He has been reading and practicing for nineteen years.

Other necromancers have examined the practice and written uneasy reports. The reports agree the rites function. They disagree about why. He has been offered a formal ordination after the fact, twice, and declined both times. He is not interested in being received by a body that did not train him. The Thin Coat is named for something his mother said about second-hand rites: they fit, loosely, and they let the cold through. He has found the cold useful.
