Mortis Kell apprenticed to Soulbinder Aevra, whose chapel-ship bound Dominion captains to new vessels, tying a name to a sigil so that a lost ship could still name its captain at the funeral. Aevra performed nine hundred and forty such rites. When she died she did not leave the chapel to a successor. She left the ledger, and all nine hundred and forty names, to her apprentice.

Mortis maintains it. He attends the funeral of any captain on it when he can travel. He will take work that brings him within range of a pending name. He does not consider this sentiment. He considers it bookkeeping. The Tether-of-Names carries the ledger in a cold archive whose temperature he keeps himself.
